Pharmacy pre-registration troubles

During the 3rd year in pharmacy, we are bombarded with the fact that we need to prepare to apply to various pharmacies at the end of the year for a pre-registration placement. If we have an eye on certain pharmacies, we might have to think about it even earlier as they require you to do a 3rd year placement in order to qualify for a pre-reg. And if a place couldn't be secured before the start of 4th year, we would need to worry about it when term starts as well.

I, for one, did not have much trouble with securing a placement, and I am thankful that I did and do not need to go through what my friends are going through. Take a friend of mine for example (let’s call her R), who has gone through a bit of tough times just to get the placement that she is finally happy with.

R did a 3rd year placement with X pharmacy, which was a pre-requisite for a pre-reg. When she applied for her 3rd year placement location, she did not realize that the pharmacies in the northern region actually bonded a pre-registration student for 2 years – meaning the pre-reg year plus one year as a qualified pharmacist. If you were going to break that bond, you had to pay a huge sum of money. She had her own reasons for not wanting to be bonded, so started searching for alternate arrangements by asking for advice from the university tutors, who were happy to help her in trying to find a new location.

About a month ago, she had an offer from Z pharmacy, which she had gone for an interview for during the summer (yea, long time ago), and thinking that she could not get a better location with X pharmacy, she verbally accepted the offer, not knowing what will happen next.

R heard back from X pharmacy, offering her a location that she was happy with. Whilst comparing X and Z pharmacy, she found that X was more attractive and rejected Z though email, and thought nothing more about it.

She got a call from Z pharmacy early in the morning, asking her why was she rejecting their offer. Being too honest, she told them that she had another offer from another company, with better conditions than Z. The caller from Z (let’s call her T) then said that they can still negotiate for better conditions, but R stressed that she really was rejecting their offer.

As it is too long to repeat what was being said in their conversation, I’ve decided to extract and edit what R had wrote in her blog (I feel that it’s better than she remain anonymous so excuse me if I do not put her blog address in). Below in blue is what was being discussed and in red is R’s explanation of what really happened. (“She” in the extract is T, and “I” is R)

She said I had been unprofessional because they actually sent me two offer letters since September but I took long time to reply their offer.

This isn't true because Z Pharmacy had only made an offer to me recently. I was on hold since August .

She said there were actually two offer letters but first offer letter was lost on its way. After a second check, she found out the offer was made on 10/10/2008.

T then changed topics and she said since an offer had been made on 10/10/2008, why did I take so long time to reply?

I said I had only received offer letter from them after two weeks, which was on 28/10/2008. I received offer from another company (X) after I had received offer letter from them. I took about two weeks to reply them because I needed time to make my decision. (She later found out that she only had the letter for 8 days.)

SHE SAID TWO WEEKS WAS TOO LONG TO MAKE A DECISION.

I replied her saying that I think I have the right to make decision in two weeks. Even for first round candidates, RPSGB also mentioned that they must given enough time to decide, how come I can't have that TWO WEEKS?

Fact: There wasn’t a reply-by date stated on the offer letter.

She said because of me they had to turn down other candidates.

I explain to her that I was told by her manager that the place I was offered to already have enough students and my offer was by special arrangement. So, I had taken it for granted that no other candidates are waiting for my post.

That phone conversation ruined her whole day. Imagine waking up to a call like that. She was also told that she was being unprofessional and a complaint would be submitted to the university about her. She again went for advice from her tutor and staff in the school and was told that they would support her and that Z pharmacy had no grounds to do anything to her, but to email them regarding what had happen so a response could be given if and when a complaint letter was submitted.

I would not say that my friend was totally blame-free. She was being a tad unprofessional by verbally accepting and then rejecting Z pharmacy but I would say this is due to naivety about how the world is. How can it be that they expect students who are in their last year of pharmacy, to know all about the working environment? This just discourages students when they think about having to work soon.

The caller from Z, was being unprofessional herself when she made groundless accusations. She should’ve gotten all her fact right before accusing someone else of being unprofessional.

I would like to commend the School of Pharmacy for standing by their own students first and in helping R a lot in her decisions.

Several things to take from this situation:

  1. Do not give a verbal agreement if you are not sure. Tell them, “Thank you very much for the offer, but I would like several days to consider this offer.” I, for one, was very lucky as my future employer told me to go back and think about it first.
  2. Be sure that you are happy with any decision you are going to make.
  3. Be sure that you are able to back up your decision with valid reasons and that you can stand firm in your decision even when faced with accusations (especially when those accusations are false). This is something you would have to do when you are working.

I wish everyone the best in their applications for a pre-registration placement and may what I have told you help you in what not to do when applying. It is good to keep options open but do not respond in the affirmative when you are not sure about it.

Freedom to blog?

We were recently sent a mail by the University asking us to be careful of what we post in our blogs, Facebook or anywhere else on the WWW, as to avoid any defamation or any legal action being taken on us. The mail also stated that we had to abide by the University's regulations on IT behaviour.

I think this is email has reminded us that even though we have the freedom of speech, we still need to be careful when using that freedom. As we progress into the world of technology, it is inevitable that someone somewhere who is or will be connected to you in some way (read: employer) will read anything that you have posted up in your webpage. If you are careless in the thoughts that you immortalise on your blog, people are going to read it and form their own opinions about you. It will not be a good day when you go for an interview, and the interviewers start asking you why you wrote such and such.

It may be frustrating and you may say that a blog is my own and I can write whatever I want, if you don't like it tough. But, remember, there are readers out there, and in this time and age, many people will eventually stumble upon what you have wrote.

I do not know if I have defamed anyone in my blog, but I hope I have not done so. When you are struck by the writer's bug, you do not think for an instant that maybe what you are writing might lead you to a law suit, but spare a thought for that. We are always governed by legal aspects, be it internet conduct or dispensing (as I am still worrying about that).

Being Bullied, House Hunting, Baking Frenzy, Food and Free Movie!

What you see above is Puisan, locking me in my room.. :( terrible person.. and the faulty lock couldn't be open with my key from the inside. Had to throw the key out so she can open the door from outside.. Yeap.. she's evil..

It's the time of the year to start house hunting for next year! Which is a pain... one thing i'm glad of is that we'll be rid of this house, but i feel some reluctance in moving away. I've made the room Mine and now will have to make another room Mine.. So, when the landlady told us about the reduction in rent for the next year, a part of me wants to say, "Yes, we'll stay on." But as we found some place even cheaper, it wasn't that hard a decision to make. But we won't be going far.. only a few houses away!

Me and my crazy gang (read: Pui San) have been going on a baking frenzy... chinese Egg cake. Which is quite easy to make, if you have an electric mixer. We didn't. We used sheer force to whip the egg white and egg yolk until the white was stiff and the yolk three times the original volume. Imagine how our muscles were complaining. Google the recipe if you want.

I also made Glutinous Rice. Which wasn't nice at all.

Had free movie passes last night! Remember the part about volunteering for the Nottingham Malaysian Games? Us volunteers were treated for a free movie! I watched Sweeney Todd, while Li Wui and her bf watched In the Valley of Elah. Both were boring... waste of a free ticket.. Can't remember which day I made Tandoori Chicken. It was just all right. Nothing special.

Will be going to a concert tomorrow evening, swimming on Friday, and Cadbury's Chocolate Factory on Saturday! oh.. and another thing.. results out on Friday..

So... what should I do in Easter? Any ideas on any cheap places to visit?

Waiting..

It's just annoying when you have to wait the whole day just to sit for an exam. Nerve-wracking really.. I wish today's paper was in the morning instead of in the evening at 4.30pm... Why can't we just get it over with first thing in the morning!

Update @ 3.30pm: I feel like vomiting..

Another update @ 7.00pm: Another paper down. This paper is just horrible...I think this is the worst chemistry paper i've sat for... and the time... urghh... got gastric because of this stupid paper!

Exam

You feel your heart beat faster... you feel nauseous... you feel that nothing is going to go right for you... you feel that your brain might explode any moment and you can't do anything about it. Urgh...

Exams are the teachers' torture method. Since most teachers/lecturers might feel tortured when they are teaching in class (since probably half the class isn't listening to him), this is the best way for them to get back at us. It's a conspiracy, I tell you.. a conspiracy..( “上课时不听课,看你现在怎么样死!” muahahahhahah)<--that's what goes through the minds of our torturers..

Anyway.. you think you got everything down in your brain, but on the day itself, your mind comes up as a blank piece of paper. Nothing inside. You can probably hear the sound of your tiny brain rattling inside your skull as all your brain contents have been leaching out when you were sleeping at night. There might be some stuff left but once you get into that exam hall, there's this force that sucks everything that you know out of your mind and you turn into an empty zombie with no intelligence at all..

So, all the studying done in one semester, falls down to that critical moment in your life.. the point of no return.. the time that you do or die.. all for what?

All for the sake of your wonderful future that you are going to achieve...

Requirement: Heat

It's really cold these days that we have to switch on the heater for a longer time - at least 12 hours a day. Anyone knows how much that's going to cost us?

It's depressing if we did no on the heater. Imagine layering up even though you are already at home. What happen to being comfortable at home? Even if we layered up, hands and feet still get cold easily and wearing gloves won't help unless i'm not going to be working on my laptop. It's already depressing enough what with there being no sun and gray skies. How much more depressing can it get if we had to bundle ourselves up even in our own house!

Maybe should've planned to go travelling this winter instead of being stuck here in Nottingham. But I guess I can explore Nottingham more and study more as well. Even after staying three months here, i still don't know Nottingham as well as I had known Edinburgh. Kinda wish i'm back in Edinburgh with my friends, carefree and having fun. Instead of being stuck here, trying to keep warm!

There's only one thing i look forward to - that is, leaving this place, and going back home where family is.

*****
Some photos!

Walking back from mass today and saw that the lake had a layer of ice on it. The birds are just standing on the ice!

Birds fighting for the pieces of bread that people feed to them. It's as if they had not eaten for years!

The birds in University of Nottingham

Food that I have been having:

There are other types of food that i'm having but these two are the only ones that i took photos of. haha...

Here's a photo i took in Edinburgh. This one shows children being brought along by several leashes..

Used?

What do you feel when someone only comes and talk to you when they need something? How is it that that person can actually not contact you for a year and then lo, and behold... you get a mail from that person asking for information. Not once.. but several times.. How can she actually bring up the guts to contact me after a year of silence, and the first thing is to ask what, where, why, how and when. If she had kept constant contact throughout, I might consider helping. But this has gone far enough!

Maybe I look like I'm an easy target - I seem useful to people. I guess it's in human nature to be close to someone that you can use and probably try not to be used in return. But everyday there would be cases where people use and are used. But I don't like being used... and I don't have use for you... so you can just forgot about it!

On a happier note, listen to the egg song.

Vision 2020

I just realise why is the target 2020. Wawasan 2020 (translated to Vision 2020) in Malaysia, Pharmacy 2020 which aims to bring pharmacy into the future.

20:20 Vision... get it? The ability to see things far off and clearly.

hmm... most people are going to start thinking i'm dense.

Two classes of Humans??

Just came across this article from BBC UK: Human species 'may split in two'. Imagine that.. According to the article, in 100,000 years' time, Homo sapiens would evolve and split into two different classes. A direct quote from the article: "The descendants of the genetic upper class would be tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures."

Ok.. I'll leave it here. Don't want to turn it into a research blog where I have to make sure I did not plagiarise anything... So.. read the article here.

Wonder which class of human would i fall into in 100,000 years' time....
